Social networking sites 'should promote security'
The level of security offered by different settings on social networking sites should be clearer to stop members falling foul of fraudsters, it has been claimed.
According to consultancy firm Experian, it is possible that those who have needed help with money advice having been defrauded by criminals using social networking site information could have avoided the problem if they were better informed.
The firm states that, while security features may exist, they are "not particularly well promoted.
Neil Munroe, external affairs director for the firm, remarks: "[Social networking sites] are a sign of where the world is going. It will develop, we can't stop it, just be aware that while it is a great opportunity to communicate it is also a great opportunity for fraudsters."
Meanwhile, in other online personal finance news, a recent survey by Get Safe Online established that as many as eight million people in the UK leave their wireless networks unsecured, allowing access for strangers.
