Self-builders 'should focus on the basics'
The nation's self-builders should make sure to focus on the less glamorous aspects of home construction to achieve a successful result, an industry body has claimed.
According to Selfbuild and Design magazine, key considerations are the level of insulation and property orientation to maximise natural light available.
The publication states that those looking for help with loans to fund such a project should bear in mind that these simple undertakings are likely to be more cost-effective than gadgets such as wind turbines and solar panels.
Ross Stokes, editor of the magazine, states: "Most self builders would prefer to build to a green agenda - depending on budget.
"Budget seems to be the biggest deterrent."
The money news follows research published by Norwich and Peterborough Building Society, which asserts that as many as 20,000 consumers choose to build their own home in the UK each year.
