Secure transaction behaviour 'can avoid personal finance disaster'
With Christmas swiftly approaching, increasing numbers of people are looking to the internet as an easy source of gifts.
However, Apacs, the UK payments association, has said that to avoid needing help with money following others using their card consumers must ensure that their computer is secure.
According to the firm, many personal finance security risks can be avoided simply by using common sense.
However, the increased prevalence of the internet as a means of spending has given rise to higher levels of card fraud risk.
"There are steps to take before you start the transaction and by that I mean make sure your computer is protected: up-to-date anti-virus software, personal firewall installed," said Mark Bowerman, spokesperson for the association.
He added that for those seeking out Christmas treats on the highstreet, being vigilant about avoiding cash machines that appear to have been tampered with is vital.
According to recent statistics from consultancy firm Experian, one in four people in the UK has been the victim of ID fraud at some point.
