Prevention 'better than cure' regarding ID fraud
Prevention is a far more effective way of dealing with ID theft than tackling the issues after a personal finance upset has occurred , according to one commentator.
Equifax, a company which offers services to a wide range of sectors, states that a variety of small checks can prevent consumers needing help with money due to ID theft.
Neil Munroe, external affairs director at the firm, remarks: "You should have very good spam and spyware software. A lot of people wouldn't know what that was. Always make sure that the site you are on is secure and has a padlock in the corner.["]
He added that consumers should not open any emails about which they are suspicious and should refuse to offer up information over the telephone unless they are sure of to whom they are speaking.
Furthermore, he added that unlike many crimes, ID theft is a problem affecting all levels of society to a broadly equal degree.
In related money news, personal finance commentator Fellowes undertook a study which established that 97 per cent of household waste contained one or two items needed by fraudsters to steal an identity.
