Homeworkers 'must ensure appropriate cover is paid for'
People working from home should ensure that their employer has allowed the appropriate amount of insurance cover, it has been suggested.
According to personal finance institution the Association of British Insurers (ABI), it is vital that workers take such factors into account to avoid experiencing problems when making a claim.
This is because working away from the office can affect a home insurance policy - and anyone making a claim under such conditions may find that their insurer will not honour it.
Additionally, different business undertakings will require different levels of home insurance, whether the worker is self-employed or working for a larger organisation.
Malcolm Tarling, spokesperson for the ABI, remarks: "If you are working part-time from home, it may well be that your household insurer is willing to extend that cover anyway, but if you're actually setting up a cottage industry, of some sort of manufacturing nature, that could be a different matter entirely."
In related finance news, the Health and Safe Executive warns that employers are responsible for any electrical equipment that they supply to their home-based staff, but that any equipment supplied by the employee need not be maintained by their management.
