Eco-towns 'are the easy way out'
The government's plans to construct so-called eco-towns throughout the UK have been condemned by one industry body.
The Federation of Master Builders has stated that such towns are an easy way out for the government, which fail to address underlying problems in the current stock.
Brian Berry, director of external affairs at the federation, remarks: "We think that the government is taking the easy option. The challenge is what you will do with the existing stock; that's where the real problem is and that's more complicated".
Consumers who choose to update their homes to make them more energy efficient, funded for instance using help with loans, could find that their property's value increases and that they save money on bills.
The government's current plans involve providing help with finance and improving environmental credentials in some "exemplar" estates of up to 20,000 homes.
They are intended to feature good public transport systems and low and zero-carbon technologies.
