Christmas rush 'is valuable to the high street'
The Christmas rush is likely to provide welcome relief for the country's retailers, it has been claimed.
Money may be tight for many consumers, with concerns about trouble with debt and bad credit plaguing a number of households.
But the British Retail Consortium (BRC) is confident that Christmas will bring shoppers back on to the high street providing valuable help with money to stores throughout the UK.
Richard Dodd, head of media and campaigns for the BRC, said: "Christmas is the crucial time of the year overall.
"Some retailers do 60 per cent of their business between November and January."
He said that, while this year might not provide the spectacular growth of some Christmases past, it was hoped nonetheless that consumers would spend enough to effect a three per cent rise.
According to the firm, shoppers spending over the festive period will be worth in excess of £12 billion to retailers.
