BRC predicts Christmas spending 'will be interesting'
The forecast for Christmas spending is likely to be similar to 2006 this year, although the outcome will be of even greater interest to those providing help with money, it is claimed.
According to the British Retail Consortium (BRC), it would be a "real shock" if sales this year were less that 12 months ago.
However, it added that given tight conditions in the economy at present, retailers were not expecting substantial growth this festive season.
Richard Dodd, head of media at the BRC said: "Obviously, trying to predict how big or small the growth will be is a risky thing, particularly this year as people are watching this so closely."
He added that in 2006 only modest growth was experienced but that this was not a concern as "in the run-up to Christmas last year some people were predicting a disaster".
According to the BBC, money news from Deloitte suggests a seven per cent growth in spending this year, with average expenditure reaching £706 per capita.
