'Beware rogue traders'
Flood victims are being warned of the risks posed by rogue traders offering to repair their homes.
With many homeowners looking to make essential repairs to their properties following the summer's flooding, avoiding the need for later help with money, there is expected to be a surge in demand for builders.
But Lloyds TSB Insurance is warning that allowing bogus builders without the necessary skills and qualifications to do the job could impact unfavourably on the long-term personal finance situation of householders..
Botched repair jobs that needed rectifying cost homeowners a total of £1.36 billion last year, Lloyds TSB claims, and the figure is likely to rise to £2 billion this year.
“It's understandable that those affected by this summer's flooding are eager to get the repairs to their home completed as quickly as possible, especially with Christmas just around the corner," commented Phil Loney, managing director of the personal finance institution.
"But it's equally important to ensure that the work is carried out safely and completed by qualified tradespeople."
He advised always using builders recommended by insurers or family and friends.
Floods impacted on large sections of Britain over the summer months and the Met Office is predicting that more poor weather could follow this winter.
