Banking sector 'needs support on fraud'
More support is needed if the UK's personal finance providers are to effectively tackle fraud and money laundering, it has been claimed.
According to industry representative body the British Bankers' Association (BBA), the government's Home Office needs to be more proactive in preserving the interests of consumers.
Angela Knight, chief executive at the BBA, remarks: "Financial crime does not feature in the list of priorities the police has been given by the Home Office.
"We now need more support to be more effective and we urgently need the government to make fraud and financial crime a priority for law enforcement."
She added that personal finance institutions already fight crime by stopping money laundering and other activities by organised criminals in their early stages, where funding is being gathered.
Today the BBA announced that it believed a balance must be struck between protecting consumer confidentiality and tracking down those avoiding taxes.
