Soaring gas prices could fuel huge rise in energy bills
Soaring gas prices will fuel a massive rise in the average household bill this year, it has been claimed.
Energyhelpline has calculated that with wholesale gas prices set to surge, the average consumers' bill for gas alone is poised to rise by 64 per cent.
This increase will propel the average home's combined outgoings for energy past £1,500.
The rise comes after the so-called big six energy companies have already imposed double digit increases on fuel tariffs.
As a result they have come in for strong criticism from consumer groups which have questioned the need for the rises in the light of huge operating profits reported by the companies for 2007.
Mark Todd, the director of the website, told the Telegraph: "If this year's prices weren't bad enough, gas prices are set to get much, much worse.
Should the site's prediction prove true it would mean that the average energy bill has increased threefold since 2005 when the typical outlay was £662.
