Simpler tax forms called for
The tax system should be reformed to ensure individuals pay the correct amount and improve service, according to a group of MPs.
Edward Leigh MP, chairman of the Public Accounts committee, claimed the HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) could generate extra revenue by simplifying both its forms and website, in addition to offering better quality advice.
He said: "Too many people are unintentionally making mistakes, resulting in an estimated underpayment of tax each year of some £330 million."
The MPs' report highlighted the fact that 3.3 million self-assessment tax returns had been incorrectly completed in 2001-02. This led to the Treasury receiving £2.8bn less than it should have done, with £330m of this figure unintentional.
Mr Leigh also claimed that HMRC "is falling short of industry standards" in terms of dealing with telephone enquires, although the data published suggests full and accurate information was given in 95 per cent of all cases.
The HMRC introduced a shortened form for self-assessment taxpayers last month to improve performance.
