Pensions 'essential' for 21st century women
The fragility of modern marriages mean that it essential that women have their own pensions and savings, according to a financial adviser.
Ruth Whitehead said that having a separate pension plan is advisable due to the fact that dividing a single pension in the event of a divorce is complicated and emotional.
She explained: "Traditionally there has been an understanding that the husband's pension will provide for them both later on. But for anyone in the twenty first century, there's absolutely no guarantee that your marriage is going to last that long.
"[What oftens is that divorced wives] have to try to annex some of their husband's pension provision as part of the divorce proceedings, which is painful and difficult to do."
Mr Whitehead said that the reason that many women have no personal pension provisions is that they tend to "sacrifice their own futures because they're concentrating on the needs of others".
