One in ten homeowners burgled while on holiday
The vulnerability of homes to theft when its occupants go on holiday has been highlighted by new research from Churchill Home Insurance.
According to a poll conducted by the home insurance provider, one in ten homeowners has returned home after a holiday, weekend break or day trip to find they have been burgled.
The average total value of the items lost through the thefts was £3,288.
Claire Foster, spokesperson for Churchill Insurance, commented: "Arriving back from a holiday or a quick break to discover your home has been broken into is an awful experience for anyone to endure.
"Whilst insurance cannot prevent burglary, it can provide reassurance that the monetary value of anything stolen is covered."
To guard against burglars, Churchill recommends that homeowners embarking on trips ensure that they open the curtains and take in milk and newspapers to conceal their absence.
Also advisable is ensuring that all valuable items are out of view for the duration of the trip.
