ID fraud soared last year
Credit card holders fell victim to identity fraud in increasing number last year, according to figures from a credit rating firm.
Experian received enquires from over 6,000 from victims of the crime during 2007.
This represents an increase of 66 per cent from the 3,500 cases attended to by the firm in 2006.
Helen Lord, director of fraud and compliance at the company, said: "The dramatic increases in identity fraud we have witnessed over the last few years have coincided with the increasing involvement of organised criminals in this space.
"The rate of identity fraud growth is worrying. Although some people are statistically more likely than others to become a victim, we should all be concerned. We are all potential victims."
The research also identified those most likely to fall victim to the crime as people earning £50,000 per more and directors of companies which employ more than 50 people.
These groups were found to be three times and five times more prone to falling prey to identity fraud than the average consumer respectively.
