House prices on the up
Despite evidence to the contrary, house prices are continuing to rise in the UK, a new study from Rightmove suggests.
Figures from the company released today show that asking prices for property in England and Wales hit a record high in May.
The rise goes against recent falls in house prices on surveys from lenders Halifax and Nationwide - as well as widespread predictions from analysts of a weaker housing market as the year progresses.
Rightmove said that the average price now stands at £242,500 - up 1.3 per cent on the month before. The annual rate of inflation has also risen from 1.3 per cent to 2.2 per cent, according to the latest results.
Miles Shipside, commercial director of Rightmove, warned that this month's rise would not continue as the year progresses.
"Sellers who are hanging out to achieve last year’s prices need to accept that the market has fallen and that they will end up being punished by a lower price in the long run," he commented.
