Homeowners warned over ambitious renovations
Homeowners have been urged to consider carefully which home renovation projects they take on, or face invalidating their home insurance policy.
Halifax Home Insurance issued the warning after research conducted found that 1.7 million UK households have been living with an unfinished DIY or home renovation project for over two years - highlighting the fact that many are taking on work for which they are ill-qualified to do.
Moreover, should something go wrong during complex electrical, plumbing or building work, it is possible that the homeowner rather than their insurance provider is left with the bill, the company cautioned.
David Rochester, head of underwriting at Halifax Home Insurance, said: "Employing a professional tradesperson can be an effective strategy to ensure work is completed on time, on budget and to an acceptable standard.
"Indeed, employing a qualified tradesperson to complete complex renovation projects is vital if householders don't want to risk invalidating their insurance policy if a problem occurs."
