Home improvers urged to tread carefully or invalidate insurance
Britons planning to use the May Bank Holiday to carry out home improvements have been urged to take care that they do not do anything to invalidate their home insurance policy.
According to price comparison site Confused.com, millions of homeowners are unaware that "half of the jobs they undertake [around the home] can invalidate their insurance should they need to make a claim".
In response, Debra Williams, managing director of the site, has provided a series of guidelines to prevent DIY from impacting on your home insurance cover.
Chief among these is that homeowners inform insurers of any alteration work they intend to carry out, even minor work such as changing a lock since this can invalidate a claim if the lock does not match the one listed in your policy.
Also recommended was not given workmen carrying out work a key with which to access your home and not leaving tools around or opening windows to let paint dry overnight.
