Holidays are ring-fenced
Despite the rising cost of food and fuel and falling house prices as many as 28 per cent of people are refusing to forego their summer holiday.
According to American Express many are preferring to ration their daily treats in the run up to summer.
Spending on a new outfit (22 per cent), meals out (21 per cent) and an extra night in the pub (15 per cent) are all being sacrificed fro saving for a summer getaway.
A further 13 per cent of people are delaying a major home purchase, such as a TV or sofa.
Kirstie Bayley, vice president, American Express Travellers Cheques said: "Whilst people are thinking about their spending now, it's the last thing they want to worry about when they are actually enjoying their break.
