High energy bills help make today most expensive day of the year
Soaring gas and electricity bills coupled with heavy spending over the Bank Holiday weekend and other household outgoings means that today is the most expensive day of the year, according to research.
According to TalkTalk, May 6th is the time when Britons are hit harder in the wallet than any other day because it is the day when higher energy bills must be met along with council tax payments and annual TV licences.
Also set to weigh on consumers' finances is the fact that they are likely to have spent heavily over the Bank Holiday weekend.
Dominic Stinton, marketing director at TalkTalk said: "Having taken into account the fact that several large bills are stacked up for payment straight after a payday, and a Bank Holiday weekend of heavy consumer spending, we've calculated that May 6th is the year's most expensive day."
Many homeowners whose fixed rate mortgage expired in April will also face a more expensive day today, with TalkTalk's research suggesting that this could be as much as 21 per cent of all those with fixed deals.
