Government to unveil fuel poverty relief plan
The government is today poised to announce plans to provide assistance to elderly people and those in low income groups with soaring fuel bills.
Under the proposals from the energy watchdog Ofgem, vulnerable people will benefit from measures which will ensure they are on the best tariff.
They will also receive help to improve the fuel efficiency of their home.
Sir John Mogg, Ofgem chairman, said: "Fuel poverty is caused by a combination of rising energy prices, low incomes and poor housing.
"That is why action must first and foremost be for government. But we have to find ways to identify and target more effectively low income and vulnerable customers most in need of help from the government, suppliers and non-government agencies."
The government is also planning to ask price comparison sites to promote their telephone switching service to enable those without internet connections to access the cheapest deals more easily.
