Fewer facing bankruptcy
Bankruptcy levels showed a surprisingly sharp decline in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period in 2007, according to the Ministry of Justice.
The number of forced bankruptcies during this period stood at 4,851, down 15 per cent on the first three months last year.
This trend was also reflected in the number of people willingly entering bankruptcy, which stood at 13,080 in the first quarter of 2008.
Although this represents a rise from 11,674 in the previous three months it is a 13 per cent reduction compared to the corresponding figures for last year's first quarter.
Individual insolvencies dropped by 13.2 per cent compared to 2007 and stood at 25,264, which still represents a 1.7 per cent rise on the previous three months.
Meanwhile, winding up petitions against firms that have defaulted increased to 2,965, up from 2,888 in the previous quarter but down 10 per cent on the same three months a year ago.
