Ethical investors' priorities revealed
Avoiding investing in companies which operate in countries with poor human rights records is the top priority for ethical investors, a new survey has shown.
In a poll of 2,000 members of the public conducted by F&C Investments, some 25 per cent of those surveyed said that not backing a company that had interests in countries with human rights violations would be their chief consideration.
This was followed by avoiding companies whose activities damage the environment, which was a priority for 21 per cent of respondents.
Perhaps surprisingly, fewer people objected to investments in tobacco and nuclear power, with just ten per cent and four per cent of the sample respectively citing these as a priority.
Jason Hollands, a director at the company, commented: "The public are increasingly demonstrating that they are inclined to take ethical and environmental factors into consideration in their spending decisions."
In research published earlier this year, the Ethical Investment Research Service (EIRIS) reported that £8.9 billion had been invested in Britain's green and ethical retail funds by December 2007.
