Empty homes at risk during Bank Holiday, home insurer warns
Britons who fail to adequately secure their homes when they go away this Bank Holiday are leaving themselves vulnerable to burglars, a home insurance provider has warned.
Cheshire Building Society claims that many of those planning trips are "unaware of the threat to their empty homes while they are away".
In response, the home insurance firm has issued a series of tips to cut the risk of theft.
These include ensuring all windows are closed and asking a family friend to keep an eye on the property for the duration of their stay.
Also recommended is leaving lights on timer settings so as to give the impression that someone is home.
Karen Torson, partnerships business manager at Cheshire Building Society, said: "The May Bank Holiday weekend can be an exciting and chaotic time for those travelling and it is all too easy to forget how simple precautions can protect your home.
"With an adequate policy in place, you can have a little less anxiety about the security of your property and belongings, and reserve your worries for the bank holiday traffic and weather!"
