Defaulting homeowners prevented from switching energy provider
Hundreds of thousands of homeowners could be frozen out of cheaper gas and electricity tariffs, due to falling behind with their payments.
This is the claim of finance site MoneyExpert.com which calculates that 726,000 people missed a gas or electricity bill in the last six months.
As a result, under existing legislation they are forbidden from changing provider, and could therefore miss out on cheaper deals being offered by other companies.
Sean Gardner, founder of MoneyExpert.com, said: "With wholesale energy prices increasing, it's inevitable that gas and electricity prices will rise again, so we anticipate large numbers of people to look to switch to the most competitive deals once that process begins.
"However if you've missed a bill you won't have that luxury and could be hit with price hikes that you just can't avoid. The only way to release the shackles is to pay up and move on."
As a result of soaring wholesale energy costs, all of the UK's largest six providers have increased their tariffs by an average of 15 per cent over the last six months.
