Smokers miss out on £12.5bn in savings
UK smokers who have clung to their habit despite mounting pressure to quit have passed up the chance to amass billions of pounds of savings over the course of the last year, new research has shown.
According to data from the Office of National Statistics, more than 13 million Britons are regular smokers.
The Yorkshire Bank calculates that if each of these buys a packet to ten cigarettes per day the total national spend on smoking stands at £12.5 billion per year - money that might otherwise by accruing interest in a savings account.
Gary Lumby, Yorkshire Bank's head of retail, said: "It's all too easy for long term smokers to forget just how expensive their habit actually is, but those smoking just ten cigarettes a day could easily save almost £1,000 during the course of a year.
"By putting the money they'd normally spend on cigarettes in an ISA or high interest savings account, smokers will soon see those savings adding up, particularly if there is more than one smoker in the household."
Residents of the north east of the country were revealed to spend the most on smoking in the UK, and have missed out on £1.3 million in potential savings over the last year.
