Roads 'need long-term approach'
The government needs to get to grips with the road network and develop a clear long-term plan.
That is the view of the RAC Foundation, which this morning slammed successive administrations for failing to bring about real improvements.
"Without the Romans, the turnpike system and the ministry of transport's on-off road building programme the UK's roads would be in an even worse state than they are today," said Sheila Rainger, acting director of the RAC.
"Badly planned, poorly configured, piecemeal road building programmes should be a feature of our country's past.
"Road user charging could be part of the future solution, but recent debate has shown this idea to be less popular than turnpikes," she added.
Congested or poorly maintained roads can be a hazard to motorists, leading to damage to their vehicles, accidents and otherwise avoidable car insurance claims.
The government said this week that it would extend a hard shoulder scheme recently piloted on the M42 near Birmingham and investigate car sharing lanes.
