Range of mortgages dips 60%
The credit crunch has resulted in a huge reduction in the number of mortgage deals available, new data has shown.
Figures from price comparison site Moneyfacts showed that there are now 5,725 deals on the market.
This is down from 15,999 in July 2007 - and represents a drop of almost two-thirds.
Predictably, it is the range of sub-prime mortgage products that have hit hardest, with choice for borrowers plummeting by 81 per cent.
However, the number of buy to let loans is also down sharply, with 1,444 available - a fall of 60 per cent.
Louise Cuming of Moneysupermarket.com predicted that the return to the days of a range of competitive deals is some time off yet and that it could take three years before the tide turns.
She said: "Even then, we won't get back to the full availability of such cheap deals we saw before."
