Hard shoulder scheme extended
The government has announced plans to extend a pilot scheme using the hard shoulder as an extra lane on the motorway.
Under the pilot on the M42 near Birmingham, the hard shoulder was opened up to traffic during heavily congested periods.
The extension of the scheme was part of a package of measures announced by Ruth Kelly, the transport secretary, today.
She also said her department would explore the use of car sharing lanes, which restrict parts of the road to vehicles carrying more than one person.
"Experience shows that new road capacity has to be properly managed if it is not to simply fill up," Ms Kelly said.
"There is a compelling argument for car-share or charged lanes, which have been used for some time in the US.
"In order to get maximum benefit, access to car-share lanes is limited to vehicles carrying passengers, or single drivers willing to pay a toll," she added.
Ms Kelly is keen to encourage more drivers to share cars or to use their vehicles less, meaning that people who drive off peak or who invest in greener vehicles could save some valuable pounds to put towards next year's car insurance premium.
