Government are 'neglecting fuel poverty problem'
The government has abdicated its responsibility to eradicate fuel poverty in households deemed to be vulnerable by 2010, according to an energy advisory group.
The Fuel Poverty Action Group's (FPAG) accusation follows the announcement from ministers that 1.2 million vulnerable households could still be facing the problem by this time.
According to the group, the root cause is the government's policies and spending on the issue - which will make it impossible for the 2010 target to be achieved and would also jeopardise the 2016 target to eliminating the problem altogether.
Peter Lehmann, chair of FPAG, said that in order for this to achievable around £1 billion must be spent between 2008 and 2016.
However, at present the FPAG said spending is likely to be no more than £770 million per year.
Mr Lehman commented: "The government has done a great deal on fuel poverty. However, they have not fully recognised the importance, in a world of high energy prices, of securing the highest possible energy efficiency - hence energy bills as low as possible - in the homes of low income and vulnerable households."
