Fuel poverty affects 4.5m
Up to 4.5 million people are now living in fuel poverty, according to the price comparison website, uSwitch.com.
Figures show that fuel prices have left pensions and the winter fuel payment standing, increasing by 15 per cent this year on average.
People receiving the winter fuel supplement can expect it to cover less than 20 per cent of their annual fuel bill compared to 34.5 per cent four years ago.
"If the government is truly committed to breaking the stranglehold of fuel poverty in this country then it needs to work with the industry and regulator," Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com.
"We already know that patchy, piecemeal attempts to tackle this issue do not work. Any measures introduced need to be long-term, sustainable and easy for the fuel poor to access.
"It's also vital that they leave scope for innovation and competition between suppliers too," she added.
Rising fuel bills are putting households under real pressure as they come at a time when other costs are also increasing.
