Financial industry 'holds back ethical investments'
The growth of the ethical investment sector is being held back by the investment industry, it has been claimed.
According to Lee Coates, director of Ethical Investors, interest among consumers in ethical investments is continuing to rise with consumers taking more interest in the ethos behind schemes than ever before.
However, the fact that there are insufficient ethical options as part of the mainstream investment market is mitigating growth, he claims.
Mr Coates continued: "It's [akin] to growth of the ethical market being led by individuals not the investment industry.
"The investment industry is doing their utmost to contain that growth. They’ll be quite happy if it was 90 pence not nine billon."
Growth of interest in the sector was born out by figures from the Ethical Investment Research Service which showed that a record £8.9 billion was invested in UK green and ethical retail funds last year..
