Energy firms compelled to help poor with bills
New regulations have been unveiled aimed at forcing energy companies to help the poor with their bills.
The move, which were revealed by environment secretary Hilary Benn, will compel the firms to issue low income families and the elderly with devices which will cut their energy use and result in lower bills.
These include anti-standby gadgets for electrical appliances and eco-friendly lightbulbs.
The regulations are also intended to cut the environmental impact of energy companies, Mr Benn said.
He told the Observer: "It's right that energy companies should play their part in cutting carbon emissions - that's why we are introducing this requirement - and it's encouraging that so many of them are so keen.
"It's particularly important that, in addition to doubling the requirement for energy companies, 40 per cent of energy savings will have to be made among a priority group, which includes those on low incomes and the elderly."
Around £3 billion is to be spent by the companies to combat climate change and to alleviate the plight of the poor.
