Energy bills add to pressure on households
Rising energy bills are adding to the financial pressures on households, research has shown.
A poll by Moneysupermarket.com, a price comparison website, revealed that the majority of people felt badly treated by their energy provider.
Almost all of them (95 per cent) told the website they were being "ripped off".
"People are quite rightly getting hot under the collar at the prospect of average annual bills of over £1,000, but barely any of us should be paying that much," said Scott Byrom, Moneysupermarket.com's utilities manager.
"The best tariffs for medium users of gas and electricity in each of Britain's 14 regions vary from £739 in South East England to £787 in South Wales - or just over £2 a day - which shouldn't get anyone too steamed."
As well as rising energy bills, households are also facing higher council tax charges, rising mortgage costs and, in some cases, hikes in home insurance premiums.
