Eco homes to benefit south-east
Eco homes offer the south-east of England and other areas of high housing demand an opportunity to develop in a sustainable way, according to the Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA).
The organisation is backing plans to build ten new carbon neutral towns over the next 12 years and believes areas like the south-east, where there is a serious housing supply issue, would be prime candidates.
The government is currently taking bids from local authorities before deciding on its top ten.
"The case for new eco-towns in the south-east region can be highlighted by the urgent need to address climate change and the unparalleled regional demand for new homes - driven by demographic and population factors, and a crisis of affordability," said Gideon Amos, TCPA chief executive.
"Water supply and quality is a particularly pertinent issue to the south-east, with summer rainfall decreasing water supplies will be put under increasing pressure."
Outside of London, the south-east has seen some of the biggest gains in house prices over the course of the last decade.
