Darling urged to tackle fuel poverty among pensioners
Tackling the issue of fuel poverty among pensioners must be prioritised by Alistair Darling in tomorrow's Budget, according to Age Concern.
Research conducted by the charity indicates that 2.25 million pensioners are deemed to be living in a state of fuel poverty - a state which is officially defined as having to spend more than ten per cent of disposable income on energy bills.
The figure has grown in recent weeks as a direct result of 15 per cent increases in energy tariffs enacted by companies, which have swollen the numbers by 250,000.
Gordon Lishman, director general of Age Concern, said the alarming statistics highlight the need for immediate action from the chancellor of the exchequer to tackle the problem.
He commented: "Urgent action needs to be taken. The Winter Fuel Payment must go up by at least £100 [from £200].
"We also need to see more money for energy efficiency schemes and energy firms being made to offer meaningful social tariffs."
