Chancellor to tackle fuel poverty
Relief could be on the way for Britons struggling with skyrocketing energy bills in Alistair Darling's first budget on Wednesday.
According to a report from the Financial Times, the chancellor of the exchequer will impose limits on the tariffs that the companies can impose on the 6.6 million Britons who are deemed to be living in fuel poverty.
The proposals come after Graham Kerr of Energywatch last week heavily criticised energy companies for their treatment of some of their least well-off customers.
Mr Kerr said: "We have hard evidence of £400 million of excess profits being taken off the poorest members of society just at a time when fuel poverty is continuing to rise."
During January and February, EON, Scottish Power, British Gas and npower announced that they are to increase their tariffs for gas and electricity by an average of 15 per cent.
The firms cited burgeoning wholesale energy prices as justification for the increases.
