Retired couples hold assets of £270,000
Retired UK couples currently hold an average of almost £270,000 in assets, new research has revealed.
According to research conducted by Prudential, the average couple in retirement is sitting on £269,467 in savings and assets.
This is made up of an average of £134,145 of equity tied up in their home, £95,649 in cash savings and stocks and shares and the remainder split between insurance cover and other assets.
However, despite the high level of net worth, it was revealed that just 17 per cent of retirees surveyed had sought the advice of an independent financial advisor to help them maximise their finances.
Gary Shaughnessy, managing director of Prudential's retail life and pensions division, said: "It is surprising to see just how much money the average pensioner has tied up in savings and property.
"The average pensioner could substantially boost their retirement income simply by using their savings and assets in different ways and exploring other options such as equity release to deliver an income."
