Online banking more popular than social networking sites
Britons now spend more time managing money on the internet through online bank accounts than they do on social networking sites, a new survey has revealed.
In a study conducted by online bank account provider cahoot, it was found that the average consumer spends 1.5 hours every week moving their money around on the internet - adding up to a total of three billion hours annually.
Conversely, time spent updating Facebook and MySpace profiles and contacting friends over social networking sites takes up a total of just 2.7 billion hours per year.
Matthew Timms, director at cahoots, said the trend can be attributed to consumers becoming taking a more active role in their finances as they look to offset the impact of the credit crunch and soaring prices of day to day living by shopping around for the best financial products.
He said: "While you might be forgiven for thinking that the internet's biggest draw is social networking sites, nowadays it's actually online banking. Indeed, the credit crunch is making Britons far more conscious about keeping in control of their finances.
"As a result we're flocking to internet banking, where we can instantly access and manage our finances at a time and location of our choice as well as pick up some of the best rates on the market."
