Lloyds TSB embroiled in youth debit card controversy
Lloyds TSB has become embroiled in controversy over a targeted advertising campaign offering cards to children.
According to a report from the Observer, the lender has been sending out direct mail to youths aged 16 and under offering them a debit card with their account, with cards sent out without the consent of parents.
Children have since been found to be using the cards to break the law by purchasing goods online which are not age-appropriate, such as cigarettes and alcohol as well as 18-certificate rated computer games.
Responding to the accusations, the lender defended the practice and said it was "standard practice" across the industry to not inform parents of debit card offers to their children.
A statement from Lloyds TSB said: "When we send the mailing we explain that if you are under 16, you should check with your parent or guardian whether they are happy for you to have a debit card.
"The parent or guardian could request the card wasn't issued or block it immediately if it is misused."
