Insurer issues garden theft warning
Homeowners can guard against the rising tide of garden theft by following a few simple guidelines, a home insurance provider has claimed.
In a poll conducted by NFU Mutual earlier this month, some 33 per cent of those polled said they had been the victim of garden theft.
The rise is thought to have been fuelled by thieves increasingly targeting gardens due to the high value of goods such as state of the art barbecues and high-end garden furniture which are stored outdoors.
In response the insurer has issued tips to help homeowners ensure they are less vulnerable to the crime.
Chief among these is that items are locked away in a well-secured garage or garden shed and wherever possible items should be secured to an immovable object, or concreted in position.
Also recommended is planting prickly or inhospitable plants and bushes around the garden statues and ornaments to make them harder to get to and data-tagging items so they are easier to identify if they are recovered.
