Homeowners urged to ensure shed is covered by home insurance
Homeowners have been urged to consider the contents of their sheds when taking out a home insurance policy.
Confused.com issued a warning to homeowners in the wake of research which showed that the average policy covers losses from a shed to the value of £1,000.
However, with some lawnmowers now costing more than £5,000, many people could find they are significantly underinsured.
Simon Lamble, product director at the site, said: "During the summer months, shed burglaries increase significantly, due to homeowners spending more time in their garden and not securing their sheds properly.
"It is imperative that, when taking out home insurance policies, homeowners consider the contents of their sheds, garages and any other outbuildings, and insure them accordingly."
The site urges consumers to minimise the chances of falling victim to a costly theft by ensuring garden sheds are always locked, since failure to do so can invalidate a policy and fitting a shed alarm.
