40% increase 'will send thousands into fuel poverty'
Millions of Britons would be plunged into fuel poverty if prices increase as much as is being predicted, a price comparison site has warned.
Earlier this week, energy experts forecast that gas and electricity bills could surge by 40 per cent this year.
This would bring the average household's annual fuel bill to £1,467.
According to uSwitch.com, another effect of the cut would be to increase the number of people who spend ten per cent or more of their income on energy costs by 36 per cent - taking the total facing this plight to 6.1 million.
Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com, said: "This is going to cause huge financial pressure and consumers will naturally expect their salaries to increase to help them meet the spiralling costs of living and working in Britain.
"The government knows that this will simply exacerbate the situation, but it will have one hell of a battle on its hands trying to dampen down wage expectations. The outlook is grim."
