British Gas raises tracker tariff
British Gas customers on its tracker tariff are facing double digit increases to their bills, it has been announced.
Prices for the tracker are reviewed by the company every quarter and can be either upwardly or downwardly adjusted in accordance with wholesale energy costs.
The new tariffs will raise the cost of electricity and gas by 15 per cent and 13 per cent respectively.
The rise comes in the wake of soaring wholesale energy costs and will effect around 2,500 British Gas customers.
British Gas spokesman Alan McLaughlin said: "Record oil prices have continued to drive up wholesale gas prices.
"Since the Market Tracker launched in July 2007 wholesale gas prices have increased by 104 per cent. The increase is based on movement of the wholesale market up until August 2008. It does not include the forward winter prices."
Energy companies have come in for heavy criticism this year from consumer groups having raised tariffs by an average of 15 per cent despite posting strong profits for 2007.
