Automated calls harass debtors, pressure group claims
Banks must cut down on their use of interactive voice messaging technology to call customers, a campaign group has said.
Typically, the technology is used by banks to make automated calls to customers who have missed a payment on a loan or credit card.
However, according to Privacy International such messages can be used to harass customers with multiple calls.
To guard against this, the group is calling for more stringent standards and guidelines to be introduced to govern the use of the systems.
Simon Davies, director Privacy International, told BBC Online: "I wouldn't object to a single call in a 24 hour period.
"If it goes beyond that, I would certainly argue there's an element of harassment involved."
UK banks which employ interactive voice messaging in their dealings with customers include Lloyds TSB, NatWest/Royal Bank of Scotland and Halifax Bank of Scotland.
