Retirement age to rise to 70, predicts pensions adviser
Britons face working until 70 if the value of the state pension is to be maintained, it has been claimed.
According to Lord Turner of Ecchinswell, the government's pensions adviser, workers will be forced to say in employment for longer as a result of lengthening life expectancies.
Previously Lord Turner had said that the official retirement age should be raised to 66 by 2024 and to 68 by 2046.
However, in an interview with the Times he predicted further rises in years to come.
Lord Turner told the newspaper: "This is not the end of the story. If the value of pensions is to be protected the retirement age will have to rise again.
"I would be amazed if around 2055 the government of the day were not taking the retirement age higher and we'll be at 70 by the end of the century."
