Renters 'hardest hit by energy price hikes'
Britons who live in rental accommodation have been warned that energy price hikes are set to hit them harder than those with mortgages.
MoneyExpert.com issued the warning after a study it conducted found that the average mortgage holder pays around five per cent of their income for energy.
However, people in rental accommodation pay 13 per cent on average.
This officially puts them in the category of being fuel poor, which the government defines as when consumers pay more than ten per cent of their income on gas and electricity.
Sean Gardner, director of MoneyExpert.com, said: "Theoretically suppliers do not differentiate between renters and homeowners so it must come down to the fact that tenants just don't think about changing supplier because that responsibility lies with their landlord.
"But if you're paying more than you should you have every right to ask your landlord to look at switching - it needn't take long and if you can save money it's well worth it."
