More Brits without bank accounts
Attempts to promote financial inclusion have failed to impact on the number of Britons who do not have a bank account, it has been revealed.
The government began its drive in 2005 and announced that it was planning to work with the UK's high street banks to cut the number of people without accounts from 2,8 million to 1.4 million.
Initially this proved successful, with the figure falling below two million in 2005/06.
However, last year the figure increased to 2.09 million - some 4.5 per cent of the nation's adult population.
Adam Clark, banking project co-ordinator at the financial inclusion charity Toynbee Hall, told the Press Association: "Not having access to a bank account often means paying more for gas, electricity and other bills because you have to use expensive key meters and cannot set up direct debits which qualify for discounts.
"Getting a job can be difficult too, because many employers insist on paying wages directly into a bank account."
