ID theft is UK's number one fear
Falling victim to identity theft is now the number one fear for Britons, a study has revealed.
In a poll conducted by American Express, 43 per cent of the sample named having their credit card details and identity used fraudulently as their top safety fear.
This compares with street crime, which was in second place with 41 per cent, and being mugged which polled 32 per cent of the vote.
Among small business owners, identity theft was deemed even more of a worry with 51 per cent confessing that it was their number one worry.
Chris Rolland, head of American Express Insurance Services, commented: "As fast-paced working life drives more people to rely on technology in the way they manage their lives, so the safety landscape is changing and ID theft is becoming a bigger issue year on year."
During 2007, 77,000 Britons were victims of identity fraud.
