Halifax reunites customers with £16.6m
Halifax has returned £16.6 million to customers who had dormant accounts, it has been announced.
The money has been distributed among 7,200 people who are being reunited with an average sum of £2,326.
Halifax has been conducting searches for account holders under the government's Unclaimed Assets Scheme.
It is now aiming to step up the programme and has targeted tracing the owners of 152,000 accounts with total deposits of £30.6 million by September.
This will focus in particular on areas where there are a high volume of holders of the accounts, including London, Liverpool and South Yorkshire.
Tony Wilcox, head of savings at Halifax, said: "We are pleased with our reunification progress so far.
"We have reunited more than 7,200 customers with over £16.6 million. We do however still have lots to do."
A dormant account is defined as one in which there has been no activity for 15 years or more.
